Senior research analyst praises SharePoint for its ‘breadth of capability’

Forrester Research vice-president and principal analyst, Rob Koplowitz, has voiced strong opposition to claims from some quarters that SharePoint is simply a mere variation on an internet or extranet portal.

Speaking at the recent Enerprise 2.0 conference in Santa Clara, California, Koplowitz argued that ‘what makes SharePoint an interesting product is the breadth of capability’.

Koplowitz added, however, that those businesses considering adopting SharePoint as part of their enterprise web development need to be wide awake to the its many features and not just view it as a one-trick pony:

“If you’re going to take on the beast – if you’re going to take the buffalo down – you’d better be prepared to consume every part of it”, he said.

Turning his attention to SharePoint’s value as an enterprise social media platform, Koplowitz’s advice to Microsoft was to follow closely and respond quickly to the developments in public social media sites such as Facebook and

Twitter:

“The consumer market…is moving very quickly…’ he said. ‘User expectations’ for enterprise social media platforms such as SharePoint ‘are being set by the pace of change at Facebook and other public social networks”.

On the other hand he noted how other enterprise media platforms still often needed SharePoint to optimise their performance, citing Yammer as a particular example identified through his organisation’s own research.

Koplowitz and other speakers at the Enterprise 2.0 conference also commended SharePoint for its capacity for file sharing.

In particular, Koplowitz praised Microsoft for ‘doing a remarkably good job of responding’ to competition in this area.
