Office 365, the Microsoft suite of platforms and applications available to online users, has now become an available feature for BlackBerry smartphone users.
Office 365 – which of course includes SharePoint – will be accessible at no extra cost by those BlackBerry users already paying for the enterprise level Office 365 service, or who subscribe to Microsoft Exchange Online.
The organisation behind BlackBerry, Research in Motion (RIM), is offering Office 365 as one of its new range of ‘Business Cloud Services’.
Commenting on the development, the senior director of Microsoft’s Exchange product management group, Julia White, said:
“The availability of BlackBerry Business Cloud Services is great news for Office 365 and Blackberry customers who want to get the maximum benefit from these two business collaboration services”.
RIM has incorporated several security measures to help protect businesses which choose to opt for the new Blackberry online services, namely:
• BlackBerry Balance: a means whereby the BlackBerry user can ensure that business and personal data are always kept apart, even though they can be accessed simultaneously
• The availability of specialist administrator tools, facilitating remote control of BlackBerry devices regardless of location
• Remote control capability for BlackBerry users themselves, enabling either password re-setting or data removal should their device be mislaid or stolen; a facility again capable of being carried out regardless of location
The move into enterprise cloud services is seen by many as a smart move by RIM, given the likelihood of BlackBerry being viewed even more so as the mobile choice for corporate users.
